What are the aims and scope of TC9.12?
ASHRAE’s Technical Committee 9.12 ‘Tall Buildings’ is concerned with the function, operation, energy and human safety for buildings in excess of 300 feet (91 m) in height. Accordingly, TC9.12 proposes research projects, organizes program events, prepares handbook information and is responsible for updating the following Handbook-HVAC Application chapter: Tall Buildings, and for updating the ASHRAE Design Guide For Tall, Supertall, and Megatall Building Systems.
How is TC9.12 organized?
TC9.12 is organized as a main technical committee with three subcommittee chairs. The subcommittees meet ad-hoc between ASHRAE meetings. There are no subcommittee meetings at the ASHRAE meetings, only the main committee. Most members are involved in all aspects of the TC, including Programs, Handbook, and Research.
How can I contribute to TC9.12?
TC9.12 meets at ASHRAE semi-annual meetings. The meetings are open for anybody to attend – ASHRAE members, non-members and visitors. The committee (and other interested parties) also communicate using an email list. All of the work of the committee is done on a voluntary basis. You do not have to be a formal member of the committee to volunteer for anything any committee activities although some activities, such as project evaluation subcommittees require meeting attendance for participation. ASHRAE keeps a roster of the committees voting members and corresponding members. If you want to be a corresponding member you can do so by following these instructions.
The subcommittees are often looking for volunteers to organize program events and prepare research project proposals (RTARs and Work Statements). If you are interested in working on a research proposal, you are encouraged to find one or more other people involved with the relevant subcommittee to work with, or contact the Research Subcommittee chair at TC0912.RES@ashrae.net.
Why should I attend TC9.12?
If you are interested in any issues related to tall, supertall, and megatall buildings, we welcome you to join one (or all) of our meetings! See our past programs, which reflect the interests of our TC. Topics include energy efficiency, commissioning, local climate effects, natural ventilation, and other unique challenges to these types of buildings. You know what they say – the bigger the building, the bigger the challenges! Hope to see you at one of our meetings!
